Abstract

The Effectiveness of a Program Based on Context Clues in Improving Some
Translation Skills Among EFL Students in Faculties of Education
1. Summary:
Given the low level of EFL freshmen in some translation skills and the
need for improving EFL freshmen’s some translation skills, the present
study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of a program based on
context clues strategy in developing some translation skills of EFL
freshmen in Faculties of Education.
1.1. Participants:
Thirty EFL freshmen were involved in the study. They were chosen at
random from the Faculty of Education, Tanta University, in the second
semester of 2014/ 2015 academic year. They acted as one study group.
1.2. Questions of the Study:
The study attempted to find answers to the following main question:
- How far would a program based on context clues be effective in
improving some translation skills among EFL freshmen in Faculties of
Education?
Out of this question, these sub questions were stated:
1. To what extent is the program based on context clues effective in
improving the translation micro skill (word identification skill)
among EFL freshmen in Faculties of Education 2. To what extent is the program based on context clues effective in
improving the translation macro skill (reading comprehension skill)
among EFL freshmen in Faculties of Education?
3. To what extent is the program based on context clues effective in
improving the translation macro skill (composing skill) among EFL
freshmen in Faculties of Education?
1.3. Hypotheses of the Study:
1) There is a statistically significant difference at 0.01 level between the
mean scores of pre-and post-test of the experimental group students on
the word identification skill, in favor of the post test.
2) There is a statistically significant difference at 0.01 level between the
mean scores of pre-and post-test of the experimental group students on
the reading comprehension skill, in favor of the post test.
3) There is a statistically significant difference at 0.01 level between the
mean scores of pre-and post-test of the experimental group students on
the composing skill, in favor of the post test.
4) There is a statistically significant difference at 0.01 level between the
mean scores of pre-and post-test of the experimental group students on
the overall translation skills, in favor of the post test 1.4. Instruments and Materials of the Study:
- A checklist of the translation skills used in the study.
- Two translation tests:
a) A pre-test to identify to what extent EFL freshmen in Faculties of
Education master some translation skills
b) A post-test to assess the effectiveness of the proposed program based on
context clues.
- A training program using the computer to train EFL freshmen in Faculties
of Education to use different context clues.
1.5. Findings:
The findings revealed that using the program based on context clues
for EFL freshmen in the Faculties of Education, Tanta University, is an
effective way for improving:
- identifying unfamiliar words skill,
- reading comprehension skill,
- composing skill,
- and overall translation skills.
