Abstract

In conclusion, the study of CD133mRNA expression in infantile hemangioma revealed a significantly increased expression compared to control group, cases with positive expression experienced more complications and had poorer outcome. These results confirm clinically the results of Yu et al. (2004) who demonstrated that CD133 mRNA was expressed predominantly in proliferating but not involuting or involuted hemangioma To our knowledge, this is a novel study; no other investigators studied CD133 mRNA expression as a predictor of poorer outcome in infantile hemangioma as measured by incidence of complications and intensity of treatment. This study might be useful in guiding physicians to determine which hemangioma may be most appropriate for referral and/or treatment. Nevertheless, this observation requires confirmation in larger, randomized patient cohorts before CD133 expression can be used in a clinical setting. Our studyh identified a novel molecular target for potential therapeutic treatment of hemangioma. Localized use of monoclonal antibodies against CD133, as an anti-angiogenic treatment, could inhibit the excessive proliferation and migration of hemangioma endothelial cells in patients’ subgroups that are most likely to benefit.
