Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the bioactivity of basil, Ocimum basilicum, geranium, Pelargonium graveolens, and fennel, Foeniculum vulgareis essential oil against Sitophilus oryzae and Callosobruchus maculatus. In addition, the present investigation aimed to explore the protective potency of green pea, Pisum sativum and kidney bean, Phaseolus vulgaris powders applied to rice and cowpea seeds against both pests under laboratory conditions. 6.1. Repellency activity of essential oils to S. oryzae and C. maculatus adults: 6.1.1. Dual choice assay: In a dual choice test, after one day post-treatment, all oils repelled weevils. Basil, fennel and geranium oils had a repellent effect and the weevils oriented faraway from treated medium in the direction of the control. Generally, repellency of essential oils increased with increasing concentration. The higher concentration (20000 ppm) of geranium oil induced the highest repellent activity to S. oryzae (77.3%). In contrast, the higher concentration of basil oil (20000 ppm) induced the strongest repellent effect (92%) against C. maculatus adults. |
