Abstract

Neem is one of the medicinal plants that plays an important role in management of diabetes especially in developing countries. Its belongs to family Meliaceae. Neem is a fast growing evergreen plant found in most parts of Africa including Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana. The tree grows in a wide range of soils and it is a sturdy tree which can be established in poor dry soils without irrigation. Neem kernel cake (NKC) obtained from the neem seeds oil industry is a potential alternative source of non-conventional feedstuff.
The obtained results could be summarized as follow:
1. Chemical composition of neem:
- The composition of neem seeds, meal powder were determine. Data show that neem seeds contained 15.0% moisture, 16.6% crude fiber, 2.0 % ash, 46.4% lipids, 19.44 % crude protein, and 17.16% total carbohydrate. It also contents 5.13 trypsin inhibitor (mg/100g), 0.13% HCN, 0.35 % phytic acid and 0.17% tannins.
- Neem meal consisted of 12.0% moisture, 12.0% crude fiber, 4.30% Ash, 6.3% lipids, 36.5% crude protein, and 40.9% total carbohydrate. It also contents 12.36 trypsin inhibitor (mg/100g), HCN 0.25% 0.51% phytic acid and 0.32% tannins.
2. Minerals contents of seeds and meal:
Neem seeds and meal contained considerable amounts of K, Ca, Mg, Na, P and Fe.
3.Physical and chemical properties of neem oil
-Refractive index of neem oils is 1.470, Specific gravity of neem oil is 0.915, saponification value is 172.8, and the peroxide value 1.42.
-The iodine value serves as an indicator of the degree of unsaturation. The iodine value of neem oil under investigation is 93.12. That result indicate the presence of high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in neem oil, which leads to an increase in its iodine values.
- Acid value of the investigation of neem seeds oil was 1.8 mg/ KOH /g.
