Abstract New Historicism, as a critical approach and as a literary term, has achieved great success. Both Stephen Greenblatt and Louis Montrose have contributed to the success of New Historicism. Their ideas and innovations enriched New Historicism. Moreover, the journal Representations has contributed to the success of New Historicism. Though ”New Historicism” has achieved great success as a literary term, both Greenblatt and Montrose prefer the other label ”Poetics of Culture” and use it frequently. Such new historicists as Greenblatt and Gallagher believe that New Historicism cannot be considered a literary school because there is not a definite theoretical programme; however, there are a number of theoretical principles and assumptions that new historicists are concerned with. The most important theoretical assumptions that new historicists are concerned with are: ”the historicity of texts and the textuality of history,” the concept of ”power” and the concept of ”self-fashioning.” Moreover, there is a strong relationship between new historicists and the Renaissance period. New historicists such as Greenblatt and Montrose are regarded as specialists in Renaissance studies. |
