Abstract

Zirconia has been considered an alternative material to titanium for
implant manufacturing, however improving the mechanisms regarding to
bone healing in presence of zirconia implants remains poorly known. The
objective of this study was to evaluate and characterize three novel surface
treatments selective infiltration etching (SIE), fusion sputtering (FS) and low
pressure particle abrasion (LPPA) qualitatively and quantitatively on zirconia
discs in parameters of roughness, porosity and hardness laboratory, and
experimentally on rabbit model to evaluate bone healing around titanium and
zirconia implants in a period of six weeks.
This was achieved through histological evaluation via recording bone
implant contact (BIC) and bone volume density (BVD) percentage. For the
laboratory work 24 yttrium, partially stabilized, tetragonal zirconia,
polycrystal material (Y-TZP) custom made discs divided into 4 groups 6
each: As sintered (AS ) micro-roughened (FS, LPPA) and nanoroughned
(SIE) and tested for roughness, porosity and hardness using different
apparatuses: scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope
(AFM), Profilometer, Mercury Porosimetry, and Vickers microhardness test.
For experimental work, twenty rabbits were randomly divided into 5 groups 4
each, according to type of implant used in each group. The rabbits received
