Abstract The middle years are a times of physical and psychosocial changes. These changes are usually gradual and reflect the processes of normal aging. The aim of this study was to assess the awareness of middle aged regarding bio-psychosocial changes of aging. Subjects and methods; a cross- sectional descriptive design was utilized with a sample of 273 middle aged; 150 of academic staff and 123 of employee randomly selected by a proportionate stratified sampling technique from four faculties at Zagazig university. Two tools were used for data collection; the first tool was an interview questionnaire consisted of six parts; socio-demographic data, Medical and urgical history, Lifestyle and habits, Knowledge of aging quiz, Concerns about aging and Preparation for aging. The second tool was the attitude towards aging scale. The tudy results revealed that the majority of the middle aged (87.5%) reported sati factory knowledge and the poorer knowledge was in physical issues (28.6%). They also mostly (75.5%) reported negative attitude towards aging. About one third of them (31.9%) have high concern about old age. Also, most of them (7 1.1 %) reported high preparation for old age, especially financial preparation (89.7%). Conclusion: The middle-aged adult’s Knowledge and attitudes has not associated. The middle-aged had satisfactory knowledge about ageing, but this knowledge is not affect on their attitude towards this stage. Recommendation: develop educational programs to increase middle aged awareness about physical changes of aging. In order to age successfully and cope in an old age, it requires re-evaluation of the present attitudes and the way of thinking. For local government: develop good services for the elderly. |
