Abstract New type of reinforcement concrete has been witnessed worldwide over the past three decades. This concrete called ferrocement. It can be considered as a special case of reinforced concrete consists of cement mortar matrix reinforced with closely spaced, multiple layers of mesh or fine rods completely impregnated with cement mortar. It has been widely used in several civil structures. It may be used in buildings, bus shelters, bridge decks, concrete road repair and repair and strengthening the structure elements. Ferrocement reinforcement is a wide variety of metallic reinforcing mesh materials; welded wire mesh and expanded wire mesh. This research presents a proposed method for design and construction of ferrocement foot bridges. Foot bridges are mostly light and low damped structures. They are therefore, sensible to dynamic action developed by pedestrian traffic when resonant or near –resonant conditions are possible. Nine ferrocement foot bridges will be developed and carefully designed and reinforced with various composite materials. All beams having the dimensioned of 20cm. width, 30 cm. height, 200 cm. length and 5cm thickness. Some of these beams were reinforced with traditional wire meshes; expanded and welded wire meshes. In the other beams, the reinforcements were replaced with new innovative composite materials; polyethylene mesh reinforcement. All these beams were casted and tested under four lines loadings. All developed beams showed high strength, cracking behavior, better deformation characteristics, high ductility and energy absorption properties. |
