Abstract The first chapter is the introduction which comprises a review of the recent contributions in the chemistry of 2H-pyran-2-ones. The most important methods for the synthe- sis of these compounds, their reactions as well as their spectral properties were considered. In addition, this chapter also contains a concise account on the chemistry of 2-pyridones. The second chapter is devoted to a discussion of the original work of the candidate. The condensations of phenylpropiolic esters with deoxybenzoin under different conditions were studied. Depending upon the reaction condi- tions, the above condensations gave a mixture of 4,5,6-tri- phenyl-2H-pyran-2-one (19) and 4,5,6-triphenyl-6-alkoxy- 3,6-dihydropyran-2-one (20). The structure of the dihydro- pyrans were fully established by studying their different spectral properties including infrared, 1H nmr and mass spectra. A mechanism for the above reactions was postulated. |
