Abstract

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is one of a range of thermal ablative therapies that are minimally invasive and provide an effective, predictable and controllable method of producing localized tissue destruction.
RFA which is almost universally considered as the best ablative technique is more rapidly improving.
RFA can be performed in several ways: percutaneously, laparoscopically and by laparotomy. The percutaneous technique is still the most common used approach worldwide.
Image-guided, percutaneous RFA has been used in most parts of the body, but the most widely accepted applications are for the treatment of liver tumors.
RFA is a minimally invasive, repeatable procedure with few complications. RFA is an exciting approach to destroy small, recurrent or inoperable primary or metastasis tumors in the liver. RFA can also used as a bridging therapy before liver transplantation and as a synergistic therapy with trans arterial chemoemblization (TACE) for better survival status.
RFA therapy is a safe, well tolerated and repeatable option for treatment of malignant liver tumors with few complications. RFA is indicated for small liver tumors, inoperable patients and patients who are candidates for liver transplantation.
Incidence of major complication is less than 2.2%, minor complication is less than 5% and mortality rate is about 0.3%.
Prognosis of RFA is almost similar to that of surgical resection but with less invasive procedure.
