Abstract Summary And Conclusion In this study, we compared endoscopic lumbar discectomy to conventional open lumbar discectomy, searching the surgical outcomes, specially pain relief. Both techniques give good results for patients, each technique has some advantages over the other. Endoscopic discectomy advantages include smaller wound, results in less intraoperative bleeding, shortens postoperative ambulation period and hospital stay due to less wound pain. On the other hand, conventional open discectomy leaves less postoperative complications as it gives wider wound with good visualization and better range of movement for instruments that makes it easier to detect and deal with any events. As for low back pain relief; endoscopic discectomy resulted better in short term pain relief, but for long term pain; both techniques gave nearly equal results As for radicular pain relief and for disability improvement; both techniques gave nearly equal results. Operative time and Intraoperative complications have no significant difference, if the surgeon is expert enough. It’s well known that endoscopic discectomy takes more time from surgeons to gain experience. Thus, care must be taken to wisely make the right decision for every patient and choose the best surgical technique, which must be most appropriate for the patient and well experienced by the surgeon. |
