Abstract

This study aimed: to assess the pediatric nurses’ performance regarding care of children undergoing cardiac surgery. Research design: A descriptive designs was utilized in conducting the study. Settings: This study was conducted at Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Cardio Thoracic Surgery and Cardiac Surgery Academy affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals. Subject: The study involved of 83 nurses A total sample composed of all (83) nurses who working at the previously mentioned settings in addition all children who are undergoing cardiac surgery. Tools of data collection: questionnaire sheet and observational checklists to assess nurses’ performance regarding care of children undergoing cardiac surgery. Results: The findings of this study showed that more than half of children were male. Also this study clarified that about more than one third of the studied children had VSD while less than one third of them had ASD. This study revealed that more than half of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge about nursing care of children undergoing heart surgeries, while the majority of them had competent performance of caring children undergoing heart surgeries. Conclusion: There was a statistical significant difference, between total nurses’ knowledge and their total nurses’ performance regarding care of children undergoing cardiac surgery. Furthermore, more than half of the studied nurses who had competent performance had satisfactory knowledge while the great majority of the nurses who had incompetent performance had unsatisfactory knowledge. However, there was a statistical significant difference between total nurses’ knowledge and their years of experience, training program and qualification. Recommendation: Nurses training should be encouraged in courses making and work shop to acquire them with knowledge regarding care of children undergoing cardiac surgery, its preoperative care and intensive care of the children.
