Abstract

The colon is the last part of the digestive system. It extracts water and salt from solid wastes before they are eliminated from the body. It is consists of four histologically distinct compartments: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa and serosa. The intestinal glands are long and characterized by a great abundance of goblet cells. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory disease in which patients experience cyclic bouts of clinical symptoms that including diarrhea, rectal bleeding and anemia that resulted from intestinal inflammation, edema and ulceration. Individuals with active disease have been found to have high levels of cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS) within their colonic mucosa. The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease IBD still remains largely unexplained, though it is believed to be multi-factorial. Hereditary (genetic) and environmental (microbial, behavioral) factors are claimed to interact to produce the disease. The aim of the present work was, to through some light on the therapeutic effect of royal jelly versus sulfasalazine on acetic acidinduced colitis in adult male albino rats.
