Abstract For a long time benzoic acid and its sodium salt has additive to certain food been used as protect them an from deterioration caused products to by spoilage organisms. The Vicia faba root meristem test system isused to 72 hour intact primary roots of Vicia faba L. Giza 2 were treated for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h with different sodium benzoate concentrations (0.00%, 0.01%, ’0.05% and the permissible 0.10%) dissolved in 2 liters of distilled water containing 3% (w/v) agar agar. Then the seedlings were transferred to plain agar agar to test the effect of recovery from sodium benzoate treatments for further 24 and 48 h.
