Abstract

Procyanidins are natural botanic polyphenols extracted from grape seeds, with bioactivities such as antioxidation, free radical elimination and cell proliferation stimulation. Ginseng has long been known to possess a variety of beneficial pharmacological effects, such as enhancement of immunity, and hyperlipidaemia and diabetes prevention. Oxidative stress has been proven to be involved in thallium-induced toxicity. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to examine the antioxidant potential of panax ginseng and grape seed against the toxicity of thallium in male rats. The results revealed that oral administration of 150 g/ kg bwt of grape seed and 3 mg/ kg.bwt of panax ginseng inhibited the increase in lipid peroxidation caused by thallium, reduced the elevation of serum LDH, ALT and AST activities, MDA levels and creatinine with improvement in CAT activity that induced by thallium. They also increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, and GSH-Px), GSH and total protein levels. Therefore, the present results suggested that grape seed and panax ginseng exerts a protective effect against thallium toxicity.
