Abstract

The innervation of the human bronchial tree is still
poorly understood, and few data a~e available on its
structural alteration in disease. (Laitenen A., 1985).
The vagus nerve includes affe’ent fibres f’om senso’y
receptors in the bronchial epithelium, stimulation of these
receptors by irritants can initiate a reflex impulse along
vagal efferents, causing release of acetylcholine and
bronchoconstriction. (Roberts AM, etal., (1981). Bronchial
glands are also under parasympathetic control and vagal
stimulation can also lead to mucus secretion. The vagal
efferent nerves end in ganglia close to bronchial smooth
muscle 1n the posterior wall of the larger ai•ways. The
post synaptic fibres a•e short and connect with ~uscle
and g;ands. (Nadel JA, 19°9:’.
