المستخلص - The profession of Medicine in ancient Egypt was greatly revered as a divine art primarily directed towards preserving life. - With the progress of the medical profession, specialized physicians appeared in different branches of medicine. - Many papyri which reached us from ancient Egypt reflected how advanced and diversified the ancient Egyptians were in medicine. Some of the papyri dealt with the field we now call ”Veterinary Medicine”. - Animals and birds received a lot of attention in ancient Egypt which led to the development of veterinary medicine. Aims of the Study: - To identify the types of animals and birds domesticated by the ancient Egyptians and to know their diseases and how they were treated. - To study the role played by the veterinary physicians and priests in the treatment of animals and birds in ancient Egypt. - The study of the mummification of animals and birds in ancient Egypt. Content of the Study: The study consists of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion: Chapter One: Breeding and domestication of animals in ancient Egypt. Chapter Two: Veterinary care of animals and birds in ancient Egypt. Chapter Three: The mummification of animals and birds in ancient Egypt. In conclusion, the study presented the following results: - The Animal Wealth was a great Wealth and more than we have in the modern era. - Veterinary medicine was practiced in the same way as human medicine was practiced. - Ancient Egyptians mummified animals in the same method they mummified humans. - The practice of veterinary medicine in ancient Egypt was done in two ways: One depending on magical and religious practices and spells, and another practical one based on methods such as letting blood, anointing with remedies and administering treatments. - The priests of the goddess Sekhmet offered veterinary care for animals and birds in ancient Egypt (they provided care to medicine and healing in general). |
