Abstract The synovial fluid is a protein containing dialysate of blood plasma to ”hich mucin secreted by the synovial cells is added. Synovial fluid shows changes with diseases which reflect alterations in the synovial tissues and intraarticular metabolism. The function of S}~ovial fluid is lubrication of the joints as V.’ell as it may have a role in the rrutrition of the surface layer of articular cartilage. In this study, 40 subjects were studied: 20 subjects having non-inflammatory joint diseases (osteo-arthritis), 20 having inflammatory joint diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever. All the cases were subjected to the following: detailed history, clinically examination, laboratory investigations, radiological study and determination of the synovial fluid viscosity, \vhich is aspirated from the knee by Ostwald viscosimeter, The relative viscosity of the non-inflammatory group was found to be high, while the relative viscosiy• of the inflammatory group was found to be low. |
