Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common malignant tumour worldwide, and the third most common cause of cancer related deaths. In Egypt HCC is the second most common malignant tumour, most Egyptian patients presented in late stage in 85% of cases. HCC can only be cured if diagnosed at an early stage. Up to 20% of HCC do not produce AFP, even when very large, and slight increases are usual in acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis and overlaps can cause diagnostic difficulties. DKK1 is a secretory antagonist of the canonical Wnt signalling pathway. It is hardly expressed in normal human adult tissue except in placental and embryonic tissue .It was shown that high levels of secreted Dkk1 could be specifically measured in cultured media derived from multiple human cancer cell lines such as lung cancer, breast cancer, glioma and uterine cervical cancer.
