Abstract

The sealing ability of AH Plus and EZ-Fill sealers was compared using the dye extraction method. The apical extrusion values using the bi-directional spiral versus the lentulo-spiral were also determined using a precision balance.
Methodology: Eighty single rooted teeth with straight canals were selected and prepared using ProTaper rotary instruments. The specimen were divided into two groups according to type of sealer used for obturation ; Group A with F5 Universal Gutta-percha points /EZ- Fill and Group B with F5 Universal gutta-percha points/ AH Plus. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups according to method of sealer application; subgroup 1: the sealer was introduced in the canal using the bidirectional spiral and subgroup 2: the sealer was introduced using the lentulo-spiral. After obturation the extruded sealer was collected on a pre-weighed cover glass and weighed using a precision balance. Microleakage was also assessed in all groups using the dye extraction method.
Results: Data collected for weight of the amount of extruded sealer and optical densities from dye extraction for leakage assessment were tabulated and statistically analyzed. When sealer extrusion was compared there was no statistically significant difference between sealer types regardless of type of spiral used. Yet there was significantly less amount of sealer extruded by the bi-directional spiral than the lentulo-spiral regardless of sealer used. When comparing microleakage there was no significant difference between sealer types regardless of spiral type used or between spiral types regardless of type of sealer used.
Conclusion: The bi-directional spiral seems to be a promising method to eliminate sealer extrusion when compared with the lentulo-spiral during sealer placement.
