Abstract In this thesis the TOVs in DFIG-based wind farms as a weak grid connected to HVAC systems will be investigated. A detailed study of the effect of power system parameters on TOVs is evaluated. These are source strength, line/cable length, shunt compensation, and switching angle. The study aims to find the more affecting parameter, which creates the worst overvoltages case. Furthermore, the possible mitigation methods such as pre-insertion resistor (PIR), controlled switching of circuit breaker, shunt reactors, and surge arresters are introduced, applied, and compared. Different scenarios, which lead to TOVs in the wind farm, are taken into consideration. These scenarios include the symmetrical and unsymmetrical switching. The study aims to find the best mitigation method. ATP (Alternating Transient Program) as a universal program for digital simulation of transient phenomena is used to simulate and evaluate possible TOVs in the network as well as to examine different mitigation methods. |
