Abstract Water quality of Noubaria canal was tested for a period of two years (2008- 2010). Samples were analyzed for physicochemical and biological parameters. Canal water turbidity, electrical conductivity (E.C), chlorides, sulphate, phosphate, total dissolved solid (T.D.S), total hardness and alkalinity were higher in winter than in summer. Ammonia, nitrate and nitrite varied through the study period while silica was stable. Chemical oxygen demond (COD), Biological oxygen demand (BOD5) were lower in summer while dissolved oxygen (DO) was rather constant. Total bacteria and coliform counts were higher in winter. This was attributed to increasing of ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. Noubaria canal water quality improved through a new constructed biofilm treatment system to reduce chemical addition upon treatment. This system included sedimentation tanks and biological filter (BAF) under full aeration condition. |
