Abstract

Approximately 20% of malignant tumours of the head and neck originate in the larynx. Carcinoma of the larynx is, in fact, the second most common neoplasm of the respiratory tract and is superseded only by carcinoma of the lung.
More than 95% of laryngeal cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The suprapraglottic neoplasm forms about 34% only of this number, while glottic neoplasm represnt 65% and subglottic neoplasn forms about 1% of all laryngeal cancer.
This nessicitate the application of various imaging modalities include plain Film Radiography, barium swallow, ultrasound,MRI, PETandMDCT.
For evaluation of laryngeal carcinoma examination by MDCT can visualize the gross anatomy of the larynx and laryngeal mucosa as well as laryngeal tumors, cartilage invasion and lymph node metastsis helping the staging of laryngeal cancer accuratly.
MDCT proved to have many benefits such as saving time of examination and decreasing the amount of the contrast as well as obtaining images with less motion artifact, detection of cartilage invasion and accurate evalution of important structure such as anterior and posterior commissures using its MPR ability.
It also help in solving a major problems face both radiologists and laryngologist for decide which the following up of the patients after surgical resection or radiotherapy of laryngeal tumours.
