المستخلص

This study tackles the importance of the design and maintenance of educational
buildings, These buildings didn’t have necessary attention in the process of design and
construction. which contributed mainly to the low quality of the building. The building
sometimes lacks the presence of architectural design basics and standards, and sometimes
reveals the difficulty of providing the necessary experience in the design and maintenance
process. Therefore, this study aims at finding an architectural guideline for the design and
maintenance of educational buildings in the local context, and also represents the potential
road map for all stakeholders that contribute to the enhancement of educational building
quality at Hadramout.
The study represents the starting point to be a basic reference for school development
including the building design standards, continuity and going further after this research, as the
study points out to the flexibility and renewability of the design in the light of new
educational trends, taking into account the nature of the target community where there is
differences in the local community in terms of urban and rural areas as well as the available
potentials.
The research is divided into three chapters as follows:
Chapter 1: Theoretical introduction of the evolution of educational buildings in the
cities of Yemen (problems and future challenges):
This chapter presents an introduction for the school building development through
specific periods represented the beginning of the monitoring of school building, and to show
the problems to which educational buildings are exposed, the possibilities and challenges they
face, it also reviews the lessons learned from the attempts to reform and development of
education in Yemen, and the most important processes in upgrading and improving
educational environments in developing countries.
Chapter 2: An analytical study of the components of the guiding manual of
educational buildings:
This chapter aims at searching the scientific and experimental inputs which involve
axes and components that serve the guiding manual for educational buildings. It also includes
a field study that aims at identifying the opinion of the respondents in organizing the axes and
components of the prospected design manual.
Chapter 3: The guiding manual for the design and maintenance of educational
buildings in the cities of Hadramout:
This chapter aims to construct the required guiding manual, through defining the
design and maintenance determinants of educational buildings, according to the conditions of

the study area. Also, it helps to review the views of the bodies’ representatives that mostly
deal with the process of design and construction of educational buildings, leading to building
up the guiding manual, validating the soundness and logic of the steps and axes included in
the manual, and facilitating the use of it.
The research ends with putting the results and recommendations of the study. The
