Abstract

Early mechanical stabilization of the pelvic ring, a multidisciplinary approach starting from the patient‘s arrival in the emergency room and an immediate effective control of the haemodynamic situation remain the bases of an effective treatment. This supports initial survival and prevents or at least reduces long-term damages.Disruption of the pelvic ring is a serious injury with a significant mortality and morbidity. Early resuscitation and exclusion of life threatening injury is essential with the concomitant treatment of the musculoskeletal injury. The need for fixation of pelvic fractures depends on many factors, and there must be clear reasons for advocating operation. Stabilization is only required for the uncommon type C vertically unstable pelvic disruptions and occasionally for type B rotational instability. In type B1 open book injury, stabilization may be indicated to reduce the pelvic volume in the acute phase. Treatment of the pelvic ring injuries requires an in-depth understanding of the anatomy of the pelvis and the mechanisms of injury.
