Abstract Tongues from 35 adult rabbits of both sexes, 22 females and 13 males, were used in this study. The Tongue appeared relatively narrow and long. It was running from the apex (anterior) in the direction of the root (posterior) with a rounded tip in front. The tongue was demarcated into three regions: 1- Anterior zone for the filiform and fungiform papillae. 2- Middle zone or the intermolar eminence for the filiform papillae. 3- Posterior zone or root of tongue for the two vallate and the two foliate papillae. The dorsal surface contained four types of macroscopic papillae: filiform, fungiform, foliate and vallate papillae. Each papilla was formed of a core of dense irregular connective tissue covered by stratified squamous epithelium. Lingual papillae serve either a mechanical or a gustatory function. The filiform papillae facilitate the movement of food into and within the oral cavity. They have no sensory function. The fungiform, circumvallate and foliate papillae contained taste buds, which were responsible for mediation of the sense of taste. |
