Abstract

The aim of this study is to assess the effect of cataract extraction by phacoemulsification on the macula , and to evaluate it as regard changes of the fluorescien finding preoperative and 1and 3 month postoperative
Thirty one eyes of patients were included in this prospective study. There was 2 group to study the diabetic(sixteen eyes) and non-diabetic(fifteen eyes) patients with diabetes had to control their blood sugar and the level of blood sugar is tested in fasting and 2 hour post prandial ; patients with history of posterior segment disorder and patients with past history of posterior segment surgery , were excluded..
fluorescien was performed between may 2012 and january 2013 preoperative and 1 month postoperatively..
The mean age of diabetic patients was 67.56 with standard deviatin 3.12,the mean duration of diabetes was 16.38 with standard deviation 4.22 while the mean age in non-diabetic patient was 66.20 with standard deviation 3.71.
Sstatistically highly significant increase in CSME (P value= 0.002) was detected in diabetic patients after one months to its preoperative evaluation . and (P value=0.008) which is highly significant was detected in non-diabetic patients. .
Also highly significant improvement in BCVA preoperatively was (p value=0.002) and become (p value=0.001) potoperatively.
diabetes can quickly damage all blood vessels by allowing excessive amounts of glucose to remain in the bloodstream. This added level of glucose can eventually damage the blood vessels, including the ones that supply the eye with the needed oxygen and supplies to operate and remain healthy. As long as your diabetes are properly taken care of and managed, eye damage is unlikely. However, ignoring treatment can eventually lead to blindness.
