Abstract This study was conducted on 110 Egyptian buffalo-bulls over a period of one year in Sers Ellian (Monofia Province). The animals were classified into 4 age groups as follows - First group 25 buffalo-bulls aged from I to 6 month. - Second group, 30 buffalo bulls aged from 6 to 12 month. - Third group, 20 buffalo bulls aged from 12 to 18 month. - Fourth group 35 buffalo- bulls aged from 18 to over 36 month. Morphological examination as well as ultrasound scanning of the testes were applied. The different morphological parameters of the testes were recorded. All tesicular dimensions showed significant variations between age groups. The testicular weight (M پ} SD) was 13.2 پ} 10.1 gm in first group (1 — 6 month age), 140. 3 پ} 38.7 gm in second group (6 — 12 month age), 298.6 پ} 22.0 gm in third group (12 — 18 month) and 381.0 پ} 60.3 gm in fourth group (18— over 36 month). The testicular dimensions (Length, Breadth and Thicknes) first group were 6. 1 پ} 3.3 cm~ 2.1 پ} 1.1 cm and 2.3 پ} 1.2 cm, for second group 8.4 پ} 2.9 cm, 3.2 پ} 1.2 cm and 3.3 پ} 1.7 cm, for third group 8.6 پ} 0.6 cm,4.1 پ}l.7cmand4.3+lscmandforfourth group 10.2 پ} 2.3 cm, 5.9 پ} 0.4 cm and 4.8 پ} 0.2 cm respectively. The shape, location and consistency of the testes were described. Concerning ultrasound scanning of the testes, the study revealed that ultrasonography could be a useful tool in examining and detecting the different scrotal and testicular components. These include, the scrotum, tunica albuginea, mediastinum testis and the epididymis. All these tissues showed a marked difference in echogenicity and varied between hypoechoic, echogenic and hyperechogenic appearance. The normal appearances of the whole testis was homogeneous. It was concluded that ultrasound scanning on the testes of the Egyptian buffalo-bulls can be considered a practical tool for confirming and ensuring the data obtained from ordinary morphological examination of the testes. Consequently we can diagnose the degree of development and healthy status of the testicular tissue before using buffalo-bulls in breeding purposes. |
