Abstract

The current work aimed to investigate the utilities- which could be presented by a computer assisted veterinary practice mangment system, including medical records. It also aimed to define the required components to establish a data management system. Moreover, to test if such EDMS are valuable for our veterinary clinics in Egypt or not ?
It was applied in the Veterinary Training Center in Sers El-layan. Using clinical data from the period of 1989-1994, a database was etablished For this purpose a data management programme was used (dBaseIII Plus). The whole number of veterinary records in the database was 3862 records. Each record was designed to include the following fields; species, date, case, diagnosis, cause and season.
Using the different functions of the database, it could be possible to display all the recorded data, edit, browse, append, insert or replace other data. It would be also possible to sort data according to the fields or creating a query files. By the later, option a number of query files were created to asses the different reproductive disorders in relation to season, cause or diagnosis.
After entering the data in the programme, it could be possible to use the different options in the database. It would be easy to retrieve any required data in the query files, such as total number of treated animals in relation to the year. The number of animals (cows and buffaloes ) which visited the center could be also easy retrieved in conjuction with the cause of visit, diagnosis and date of visit. All these data would help in the assessment of the center activities. This in turn, would be of great value in evaluation of disease prevalence in the field. It might help in drewing attention to control measures and preventive methods of infectious diseases.
It might be also considered as an early signal to such harmful pathogenes. Further researches are important to establish a database possesing all required fields in the veterinary medical records. Such database has the advantage of management and ’control of all aspects of the center activities as invoice calculations, accounts management and other inventory records. For this purpose, a suggested design for data management system was presented. Using Ms Access, a relational data management programme working under MS Windows, a number of tables were designed to cover all the activities in Sers El-Layan Veterinary Training Center. The options were arranged in ascending manner to facilitate displaying of data. It was also possible to enter all the data concerning patients in the records which were designed according to the international medical record system (POVMR).
