Abstract

Trace elements play an important role in metabolism of carbohydrate,
proteins, fats and minerals. This will leeds to high effect on growthy
production and death rate. Negative effect result in economic losses
appear if disturbance occur.
Iodine as one of these essential elements, it is important for the
building of thyroid hormones which enter in many basal biochemical
reactions and feeding; consequently iodine has an effect onproduction of
meat, wool, milk and reproductive state of sheep.
A total number of 154 Egyptian balady sheep constituted the material
of this study. Animals belonged to New Valley (El-Dakhla and El-Kharga
(134) and the rest (20) belonged to Assiut Governorate.
All animals have been subjected to careful clinical and laboratory
methods of examination to ensure their healthy status. Animals have been
classified again according to their age, sex and reproductive status (Table
1).
The most important clinical signs in sheep suffered from iodine
deficiency can be summerized in general weakness, poor condition
alopecia, a history of abortion and recently dead lambs and disturbances in
reproductive status.
The most important biochemical analysis revealed the foUowings:
1 - Low Iodine concentration in blood serum of sheep in El-Dakhla than
El-Kharga and the two oasis showed the lowest values when
compared with blood serum iodine concentration of sheep at Assiut.
2 - There is a non significant variation between males and females in
Iodine concentration in both El-Dakhla and El-Kharga Oasis.
3 - There were non significant differences between good and fairly
healthy in ewes in New Valley.
4 - A significant decrease in the iodine concentration in drinking water in
New Valley in comparison with their level in drinking water at
Assiut.
5 - The investigation showed the influence of Iodine concentration upon
the total cholesterol level in blood serum of sheep.
6 - There is a positive correlation between Iodine concentration ill
drinking water and its concentration in blood serum of sheep.
