Abstract
Shoulder pain is a common complaint among population especially elderly.
Rotator cuff tears are the most common cause of shoulder pain and dysfunction in adults. That is why it is important to early diagnose it to proceed in the proper management direction in order to enhance the quality of the patient’s daily activities.
Among the imaging modalities used is ultrasound. It is a quick, easy, cheap imaging process for the diagnosis of soft tissue shoulder diseases. Performed at the first consultation, it offers the advantages of patient and surgeon convenience and shorter waiting times. It is, however, dependent on the skill and experience of the operator who needs to be suitably trained to perform it.
Another modality is MR arthrography (either direct or indirect) is preferred nowadays to demonstrate the extent and configuration of rotator cuff abnormalities, suggest mechanical imbalance within the cuff, and document abnormalities of the cuff muscles and adjacent structures.
Though, it is considered minimally invasive procedure, its diagnostic accuracy is appreciated as almost reaching 96% as arthroscopic examination.
It has the advantage of distension of the joint space enabling for direct visualization of rotator cuff tears either in the pre-operative setting helping to choose the proper surgical procedure or done in the post-operative setting to help evaluating the joint after repair of the rotator cuff injuries.
