Abstract

With the increasing use of multimedia technologies, image compression requires higher
performance as well as new features. As this work discusses still image compression
techniques, to understand the progress in this field, we had to discuss most image
compression techniques from the old ones till JPEG2000. Which in tern clarify why
JPEG2000 is considered a revolution in image compression.
In this work we have discussed most of the existing image compression techniques.
Starting with a wide variety of old techniques, passing through the most popular
ISO/ITU the joint photographic experts group (JPEG), and ending with the new
ISO/ITU standard JPEG 2000.
As wavelet transform became a cutting edge technology in signal processing in
general and in image data compression in particular, a variety of wavelet based image
compression techniques are discussed, and the fundamental concepts of wavelet theory
are completely illustrated.
This thesis focus on the JPEG 2000 performance evaluation, studying its compression
engine, remarkable features, advantages over JPEG, and the choice of filter bank
used. Finally, the JPEG 2000 and JPEG compressed image quality is evaluated using
various algorithms (mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio, universal quality
index, and mean structural similarity index). The principles behind each algorithm
are drawn.
A visual basic program is written to compare various JPEG 2000 and JPEG
images, and four MATLAB programs were written to calculate MSE, PSNR, UQI,
and MSSIM index. All the mentioned programs and a copy of the thesis in PDF are
