Abstract
Neonatal Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy IS considered a common neurological diseases.Main problem in neonatal HIE is not only risk of permanent mental and neurological disabilities but it may extend to affect vital centers and death may occur.Diffusion weighted MRI is a relatively new sequence reflecting molecular motion of water within tissue the water molecules may diffuse\in any direction unless biologic barriers such as cell membrane or pathologic changes limit diffusion, so providing data in tissue integrity .In HIE, DWI shows restricted diffusion (hyperintensity) in basal ganglia, thalami and dorsal brain stem within 24h. after the Ischemia while conventitional Tl and T2 MRI still show no abnormalities.HIE in newborn disturbs mitochondrial energy metabolism and leads to carnitine deficiency
