Abstract It is not infrequent that the conventional spectacles cannot correct the visual defects of some patients. These patients are said to have low vision, and they should use special devices designed to help them to have a degree of useful vision, so as to maintain the visual activities of life. These devices are known as low vision aids. These special devices are aiming at making the partially sighted person feels that his handicap represents a challenge that can be met, and a victory that can be won. When the subject of low vision aids is discussed, so many questions are asked about their types, indications for use, if they are really satisfactory to the partially sighted, and what are their limitations? In this essay an effort to answer most of these questions has been tried. Most of the available low vision aids in use has been described, with stress laid on their optical principles, advantages, and limitations. Non-optical accessory visual aids were also discussed. |
