Abstract

A case study was undertaken to assess the effect fertilization and extensive urbanization on an agriculture environment by measuring radioactivity and heavy metal contents. The study area includes water and sediment samples from an open irrigation canal and soil and four crops from nearby fields. Generally, the level of the heavy metals, NORM and 137CS in the studied area does not exceed the typical levels, except for fertilized soil. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 4°K in both soil and sediment are highly correlated indicating a common source from the parent materials. The natural radionuclides seem to correlate with the artificial \37Cs in soil and sediment. The absorbed dose rate in soil sample contaminated with fertilizers is higher than the recommended value. The water and sediment in the southern part of the canal have higher concentrations of heavy metals and radioactive isotopes than the rest of the canal.
