Abstract Bisphenol A(BPA, 2, 2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl)propane is used as a non-polymer additive to some plastics. The present experiment was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of garlic in alleviating the toxicity of bisphenol A(BPA) on male fertility, testicular function and biochemical parameters.Animals were assigned to 4 groups:0 mg BPA and 0 gm garlic/kg BW(control);2 gm garlic/kg BW;40 mg BPA/kg BW (1/100 LD50);BPA(40 mg/kg BW)plus garlic(2 g/kg BW).Rats were orally administered their respective doses daily for 70 days.Treatment of BPA was found to elicit a significant decrease in sperm counting and sperm motility and the abnormal forms were increased.Plasma acid phosphatase (ACP),luteinizing hormone(LH)and follicle–stimulating hormone (FSH) were increased while total proteins (TP),testosterone hormone were significantly decreased after BPA-treatment.The results showed that BPA increased thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances(TBARS)in testes while the activities of glutathione-S transferase(GST),superoxide dismutase (SOD),catalase(CAT)and glutathione peroxidase(GPX)enzyme and the concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH)were decreased if compared with those in the control in the plasma and the testicular tissues. On the other hand, testicular 17-ketosteroid reductase enzyme(17-KSR)acid phosphatase and protein content were decreased while 179-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme (179-HSD) was increased due to BPA administration.Garlic alone reduced the levels of TBARS while it increased the activities of the antioxidant enzymes. The presence of garlic plus BPA alleviated the toxic effects of BPA, via its ameliorative effects on the fertility, testicular tissue functions, antioxidant system and hormonal status against BPA induced toxicity. |
