Abstract Since 1970, Qena-Safaga road and around infrastructure have been subjected to serious effects due to the cracks occurred between km 18 to km 31. The most important aims of this study is interpreting the real reason (tectonic action or problematic soil) of these cracks and suggesting the suitable treatment for this problem. Surveying and geotechnical studies were done to find the reason of these cracks. Surveying study (using total station) was used to monitor the displacement of these cracks and to determine the relationship between the cracks origin and the recent tectonic movements at the studied area. The geotechnical study was used to demonstrate the geotechnical properties of the underlying bed (Durri Formation) of the studied area and to determine the relationship between the cracks origin and the geotechnical properties. Finally; Surveying and geotechnical studies proved that the real reason of these cracks results due to swelling of underlying bed (problematic soil), a chemical stabilization program (using lime) was applied to treat the underlying bed, where the geotechnical properties of treated soil are improved. |
