Abstract

Intracranial vascular malformations are relatively common lesions that can cause various neurologic signs and symptoms. Lesion types seen in clinical practice include arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations (CMs), venous malformations (VMs), dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs), and capillary telangectasias.
Arteriovenous malformation patients may present with brain hemorrhage, seizures, headache or progressive neurological deficit.
Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard in
the evaluation of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), a relatively new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, exploits the magnetic susceptibility differences of various tissues, such as blood, iron and calcification and can be used in angiographically occult lesions.
There are different modalities for management of AVMs, varying between observation, surgical excision, endovascular embolization, stereotactic radiosurgery.
