Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of misoprostol alone versus misoprostol and transcervical Foley’s catheter to induce mid - trimester abortion and to compare two different volumes of the balloon of the Foley’s catheter. 50 women who were diagnosed as missed abortion by ultrasound were randomly distributed into 2 groups 20 women in group A and 30 women in group B. Abortion was induced by 400 Ug misoprostol inserted vaginally every four hours (group A) and 400 ug misoprostol vaginally combined with 16 F foly’s catheter inserted transcervically then inflating it’s balloon by 30-50 ml saline (group B) for induction of mid triamister abortion. Induction to abortion interval ,maternal side effects (naesea, vomiting and abdominal pain) and maternal compilications (haemorrhge and sepsis) were the parameters used to compare both groups. Combined misoprostol and foley’s catheter and misoprostol alone produced induction of mid-trimister abortion , but the combined group was more effective in producing this effect as it caused shorter induction to abortion interval, equal side effects and maternal compilications.
