Abstract Diphtheria is an acute infectious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheria. The disease charactterised by local infalammatory condition in the throat, accompanied by general toxaemia. Transmission is by direct DROPlet infection. The reservoir is either a case or a carrier. No age or sex is immune but is more common below 5 years. Diphtheria is distri buted world wide, but its incidence declined markedly following the extensive Use of diphtheria toxoid. The mortality rate of the disease ranging between IO-30~ and may be higher in old age. The dramatic decrease in Morbidity and Mortality during the last years ranks as one of the major succcesses of preventive medicine. Diphtheria is now uncommon in many parts of the world especially those who Use routine compulsory immunization. In the last 5 years it was noticed that there was marked increase in the incidence of cases in some governorates of Egypt especially those of Upper. |
