Abstract

Skilled operating room nurses are a prerequisite for the patients’ safety throughout the process of general anesthesia. The efficiency and assistance they give to the surgeons and anesthesiologists will influence the outcome of anesthesia and operation.
Hence, the operating room nurses should have a role during the preoperative phase, intraoperative phase and immediate postoperative phase for the management of patients undergoing general surgery. Operating room nurses must posses comprehensive skills and knowledge in the area of operating room in order to ensure the delivery of quality care to the general surgical patients.
In order to assure quality of care, standards must first be established to control practice of nursing care of general surgical patients. Basic standards should define what constitute safe practice in order to achieve quality of nursing care, and should provide measures for judging the nursing care provided for general surgical patients.
Establishing basic standards for the desired quality of nursing care requires that the basic skills be identified along with the integration of the basic knowledge that is required for performance in a designated role and setting.
The aim of this study was to develop standards of intraoperative nursing interventions for general surgical patients. This was carried out through:
• Identifying basic competencies for nursing care of patients undergoing general surgery.
• Setting basic standards for management of patients undergoing general surgery.
• Developing valid and reliable assessment tools for measuring basic standards for management of patient undergoing general surgery.
The study was carried out in the operating rooms of the Alexandria Main University Hospital (A, B, C). The subjects of this study comprised two groups. The first group consisted of all OR nurses (24), anesthesiologists (21), surgeons (17) and educators from nursing and medical field (38) who have experience in the field of the study at least five years for determining the basic competencies. The total number was 100.
The second group consisted of all operating room nurses who were included in the group I (26) and all nurses’ intern (20) who were assigned for management of intraoperative general surgical patients in the above mentioned setting. (Operating room A, B and C).
