Abstract

The present study was conducted to compare between three rabbit breeds namely New Zealand White, Californian and Flander (Flemish Giant) through karyotyping, some chromosomal studies and protein electrophoresis. 1. The Chromosome Complement of the Three Rabbit Breeds: The karyotype of rabbit breeds were investigated. The model chromosome number of each species was determined from a preliminary study of the most frequent diploid number observed in the metaphase spreads analyzed. In this study the diploid chromosome number of New Zealand White, Californian and Flander (Flemish Giant) was 2n=44. All chromosomes in the karyotype have been arranged in homologous pairs, descendingly from 1 to 21 according to size then into four groups (metacentric, submetacentric, subtelocentric. 1. A. Chromosome Complement of New Zealand White rabbit: The maximum average length of chromosomes was found to be 10.40 urn with relative length of 7% representing the largest chromosomal pair, whereas, the minimum average length was 3.14 urn with relative length 2% representing the smallest chromosomal pair in the karyotype.
