Abstract

Perinatal hypoxia-ischemia is one of the most important causes of neonatal brain injury and associated with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. So there is an urgent need to improve outcomes in affected infants.
Hypothermia therapy with supportive care for the infant with neonatal encephalopathy has been demonstrated to significantly improve the neurologic outcome in full-term infants with moderate to severe encephalopathy.
Identification of specific diagnostic predictors for patients likely to benefit from hypothermia treatment would allow for more targeted selection and likely enhanced outcomes. knowledge of the effects of cooling on all organ systems and its potential impact on medications or other interventions is important
Other neuroprotective drugs acting on different pathophysiological mechanisms in addition to hypothermia have been investigated by many researchers and neither of them has been proven to be effective
Adherence to the eligibility criteria used in any of the large RCTs is essential to provide the best care to critically ill newborn infants with neonatal encephalopathy.
