Abstract “Clinical Audit” is a quality improvement process. The idea is to improve patient care and outcomes by reviewing (i.e. auditing) current performance of, for example, a department against certain criteria and implementing changes where necessary. In simple words, the key component of audit is to ensure that what should be done is being done; and if not it provides a framework to enable improvements to be made. Clinical audit and research are closely related but distinct disciplines. Research is about creating new knowledge about whether treatments work or whether one treatment works better than another. Clinical audit is about making sure that this knowledge is being used to best effect.
