Abstract Ovarian carcinoma is the most lethal gynaecological malignancy. ranking as the second most common gynaecological malignancy after cervical carcinoma according to the latest registry of the Egyptian NCI. ~There are several morphological subtypes of ovarian carcinoma and serous type is the commonest. The actin-bundling protein fascin is involved in cell adhesion and motility. It is normally expressed in neuronal. endothelial and denderitic cells. while it is normally absent in epithelial tissue. Fascin is upregulated in various epithelial tumours. ~-catenin is a multifunctional protein invohed in two important processes: cell-cell adhesion by binding to the cytoplasmic tail of E-cadherin and Wnt/~-catenin signalling pathway. It is believed that accumulation of ~-catenin in the cytoplasm favours its translocation to the nucleus as a cofactor for transcription of TCF/LEF family and activates the transcription of target genes. Ilhich are inloh’ed in cellular differentiation and proliferation. Fascin has been shown to bind with the arm repeat domain of ~-catenin and it competes with the cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin for an association with ~-catenin. In thius study. fifty cases of serous ovarian tumours were chosen from the archive of the Department of Pathology_ Minia University in the period between 2003 and 2009. Sixteen cases were benign. 14 cases were borderline. and 20 cases were malignant tumours. |
