Abstract Flax is a prestige fiber as a result of its limited production and relatively high cost. Recently, flax acquires importance position between the natural fibers for the following reasons: ١- Escaping from the man made material towards natural fibers. - The fashion marketing for linen made garments. ٣- The flax is more environmentally friendly than the cotton production. Flax is used to produce woven and knitted fabrics with exceptional health, hygienic and aesthetic qualities. The principal physical characteristics of flax which are related to its application as textiles are rapid absorption and de-sorption of moisture, good conducting of heat leading to the cool handling, un-collection for the electrostatic charges, that is to say linen is beneficial for the human health as it provides psychophysical comfort. Besides, linen takes dyes easily and can be boiled without damaging the fiber. Moreover, the high crystallinity of the cellulosic component of the flax fiber results in many advantages such as high luster of linen fabrics especially those produced from wet spun yarns, aesthetically attractive drape, good dimensional stability, high tensile strength and extension at break, good resistance to sunlight and high resistance to alkalis and organic solvents. |
