Abstract Social dysfunction is a hallmark of schizophrenia. The inability to deal effectively with social network is not only a symptom of the disease but also is thought to be a major source of stress for patients and contributes to their relapse (45). Social impairment prevents schizophrenic patients from developing the supportive relationship that can provide them with a buffering effect (272), and as well, makes it very difficult for them to maintain a satisfactory stable living situation in the community (45). Deficits in assertiveness skills are important components of the social dysfunction in schizophrenia (80). On that base, schizophrenic patients need to develop assertiveness skills to help them improve their interaction within the community and consequently enhance their quality of life. The present study aimed at determining the effect of assertiveness training program on assertiveness skills and social anxiety of schizophrenic patients. The study was conducted at El-Maamoura Hospital for Psychiatric Medicine, in Alexandria. Sixty two male schizophrenic patients were distributed into two groups, a study and control group (32 and 30, respectively). The following criteria were considered: a duration of illness ranging from 5 to 15 years, having no evidence of organic disorder and/or alcohol or drug abuse and being able to respond in a coherent and relevant manner. |
