Abstract Chromium picolinate (Cr pic) is a trivalent chromium compound and it is one of the essential trace elements .It is provided as a dietary supplement and in many forms of over the counter (OTC) preparations.( Vincent;2004) Advocates for chromium picolinate´s usage as a dietary supplementation believe that obese and diabetic patients may benefit from its intake. Athletes and body builders were claimed to highly benefit from chromium picolinate supplementations in increasing their lean body mass.( Pittler and Ernst;2004) For the general public, data related to the risk- benefit ratio of this supplement has not been clearly clarified. Recently the long-term consumption of this compound has been questioned for its possible hazardous toxic effects on various body systems. Rhabdomyolysis and renal failure have been recroded in perivously healthy patients following chromium picolinate´s intake.( Martin and Fuller;1998 ) In addition genotoxicity was also reported in the form of DNA fragmentation induction and possible carcinogenicity.(Speetgens et al;1999) Chromium picolinate‘s toxicity is believed to result from the free radicals generation and subsequent promotion of lipid peroxidation. (Vincent;2000) The grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) which is a free radical scavenger and a highly acting antioxidant will be used alone and in combination with Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to study their possible protective roles against chromium picolinate (Cr pic) proposed toxicities.(Bagchi et al;2000)(Ray et al;2000) |
