Abstract

At the beginning of this report we mentioned the advantages of this type of columns and the gain of using this type of columns where the confinement effect by steel tube is observed, and then we mentioned a historical review of research’s made in using high¬strength concrete in steel columns.
At second part we study each component of this composite column separately to understand their behavior; we study the behavior of concrete infill and the effect of the steel tube around it, then we study the behavior of the steel tube and the effect of the concrete infill on the steel tube which show the confinement effect, we mentioned the mechanism of shear transfer between steel and concrete and the type of bond.
At third part we mentioned the different method of design and their limitations using different design codes (American Concrete Institute (ACI), European Code 4, American Institute of Steel Construction Method (AISC), Egyptian Code-LRFD (2005) ).
As the limitation of the concrete strength in Egyptian code not exceed about 50 MPa so we made this experimental test to know if we can use the equation which is in Egyptian code and other codes to find nominal axial strength for steel tube filled with high¬strength concrete or we can’t.
At fourth part an experimental test on 22 rectangular steel columns filled with high¬strength concrete subjected to concentric loading has been described. Comparison of failure loads between the tests and the design codes has been presented. Results show that Egyptian code can be used for design CFT rectangular columns subjected to concentric load with high strength concrete and gives safe calculation but, on the other hand Egyptian code gives more conservative results about 20%. The EC4 gives most accurate results for estimating the ultimate capacity ofthis type of composite columns.
An excel sheet is made to find the axial capacity of CFT column for different codes.
Organization of the study
• Chapter 1 (Introduction to summarize the advantages of CFT column and
historical review of experimental studies)
• Chapter 2 (Explain the behavior of concrete and steel and their interaction)
• Chapter 3 (Calculation of axial capacity of CFT column using different codes)
• Chapter 4 (Study an experimental test on CFT column filled with high strength concrete and make comparison between the results and the different design codes)
• Chapter 5 (Conclusion)
