Abstract

Human tonsils act as filters at the begining of both
respiratory and digestive systems
They are known to be immunologically reactive lymphoid
tissue which manifests specific antibody and Band T cell
activity in response to a variety of antigens,
carrying out
the functions of humoral and cellular immunity. The tonsils
contain many cells, committed to antibody formation which
can be shown to contain immunoglobulins of the main classes:
IqG, IgA and IgM. The palatine tonsils release their
antibodies locally as well as in the general pool.
The impact of the microbiological environment on the
developing lymphoid tissues of the tonsils results in one of
the most common surgical procedures
in childhood,
the
subsequently so often misused.
The question wether the
removal of tons i Is and adeno ids. Adeno-tons i llectomy has
such a popular operation, so widely used and
removal of the tonsils might compromise the body defence
microbes is the focus of a long-standing controversy.
The humoral aspect of the tonsils is the most
role of their immunological function and hence
to change if they are involved in a chronic
process or if they are surgically removed.
